Department
The German studies department is located in the beautiful Palais Boisserée in the centre of the old town, directly below Heidelberg Castle. We do not leave it at research and studies: our department hosts a theatre group and choir as well as regular institute festivals.
The unique view from its rooms of the castle ruins, sung about by Hölderlin and many others, will put great stories at the focus. Names such as Oswald von Wolkenstein, Martin Opitz, Brentano and Arnim, Eichendorff, Gottfried and Stefan George characterise the literary tradition of Germany’s oldest university town, while renowned Heidelberg scholars from Gervinus and Braune to Gundolf and Henkel, Karl Bartsch, Wilhelm Braune, and Peter von Polenz played key roles in the methodological and substantive development of the history of German studies.
